Top Reasons to Buy New:
High-cost repairs. If the cost to repair the system is more than 50% of the cost of a new system, investing in a new system may be advisable.
No coverage. The equipment is not currently covered by a manufacturer’s warranty or service contract, which would cover the costs of repair.
Age. The age of the system or fixture has outperformed its life expectancy and the repair won't adequately extend the life of the unit.
Service issues. If the system has been having problems and has undergone numerous repairs, then replacing the unit may be the best conclusion.
Replacement parts. Replacement parts may be more difficult or you unable to find the product number.
Improved efficiency. Newer models of units may have improved energy efficiency. Compare the yearly energy savings of the new model. Savings from higher efficiencies may help pay for itself over a period of time.
Top Reasons to Repair:
The problem is covered. The unit is still under warranty or service contract that will fix the failed part and/or labor.
Equipment is under its life expectancy. Based upon the average life of the system, the equipment has under 3/4 service years remaining to justify the repair.
Repair costs are low. Repainting is less than 50% of the cost” of a new unit.
Reliability and operation. If the unit has been reliable, or if you particularly like the features and model, then repairing may be the best option.
